About Us
VOICES of September 11th (VOICES) advocates and provides services for those affected by the events of September 11, 2001. We promote public policy reform on prevention, preparedness and response to terrorism. Through our work, we strive to build bridges between international communities changed forever by terrorism. VOICES provides information, outreach and programs to more than 9,100 members. In 2006, VOICES launched the 9/11 Living Memorial digital archive, to commemorate the lives and stories of September 11, 2001 and the February 26, 1993 World Trade Center bombing.
The 9/11 Living Memorial digital archive commemorates the lives that were lost and documenting first-hand accounts of rescue workers, survivors at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and Shanksville, PA. The archive will include the inspirational stories of the response and recovery of corporations. The archive will expand to showcase the caring, courage and compassion that the world experienced that day. Audio and video such as oral history and family videos will be included.
Since 2006, VOICES has hosted workshops across the country and met with families one-on-one to create thousands of tributes. We have documented more than 700 memorials from around the world. VOICES staff digitizes photos, biographies, eulogies and other written materials and photographs tangible items such as personal belongings and artwork. Memorializing their loved ones can be a healing and emotional day of remembrance for families. Our team of social workers helps participants through the process of organizing these fragile mementos to create a meaningful tribute to their loved ones.
The 9/11 Living Memorial, originally conceived by September's Mission, will become an invaluable resource for future generations of Americans, including museum curators, historians and educators. The site will be incorporated into the to-be-built National September 11 Memorial & Museum as a core component of its digital resource center, and will be available to the Library of Congress and other institutions.
